The origin of Pitti Immagine, dates from the early 1950s with the first shows in Florence in the Sala Bianca at Palazzo Pitti. From those fashion shows in Sala Bianca began the global success of made in Italy and the Pitti Immagine’s history, whose fashion events helped make Florence a destination recognized, as well as for art and heritage, even for the lifestyle of the present times.
It is in this tradition that Pitti Immagine Filati, the international event of reference for the sector of knitting yarn, will be held at the Fortezza da Basso in Florence from 29 June to July 1, 2016. The excellence of the spinning occurs at an international audience of buyers from around the world and designer of the most important brands of the fashion business, who meet in Florence to capture ideas and creative suggestions.
Even if this 79th edition’s most expected event will be the world premiere of 2017/18 fall-winter collections of knitting yarn, Pitti Immagine always means a series of collateral events, workshops and possibilities for unique encounters.
Sansovino 6 for Pitti Italics
Pitti Italics, is the Pitti Immagine Discovery Foundation program that fosters new generations of Italian fashion designers, or based in Italy, who already have a strong international presence. On the occasion of Pitti Filati, the event will be Sansovino 6, a brand founded by American designer – but “milanese” by adoption – Edward Buchanan. Sansovino 6 will show in Florence during Pitti Filati, and Edward Buchanan will hold a special lecture with the students finalists in the “Feel The Yarn” contest.
FEEL THE YARN
Feel the Yarn is the contest – directed by Pitti Immagine Filati and Yarning Promotion Consortium – for aspiring designers from a selection of the best international fashion schools and aims to support young talents that will stand out for their original creations, expanding creativity expressed by yarns produced by the most qualified Italian spinning mills.
In this year’s contest went 26 students, selected by thirteen prestigious international fashion and design schools, and twenty two Italian spinning mills present at Pitti Filati with their collections for autumn/winter 2017-18.
The contest theme, coordinated by Ornella Bignami, will be Knitting Time: knit as an expression of the rhythm of daily life. Pitti Immagine will invest in the new layout project dedicated to the display of the heads of the finalists and will cure the presentation brochure of Feel the Yarn.
A special award, “Splendour of Life”, will be offered by Salvatore Ferragamo to the project who will play best the typical Italian lifestyle beauty: an internship with the joining in the working group for the development of the fall-winter 2017/18 knitting collection.
The other sections
The new space devoted to researching is called “H24 Twenty four hours in knit” and in this edition presents a fascinating theme: exploring the possibilities of the matter on the basis of physical and chemical transformations and changes, feelings and needs which regulate our body and our days. H24 recounts the applications of various fibers through 24 moments, 24 atmospheres, 24 colours, 24 sensations and 24 physical states that require a different item of clothing for every hour of the day or night.
It also consolidates the space KnitClub, the area of Pitti Immagine Filati starring top quality knitting mills. Knitclub was created to gather a selection of national and international companies able to interpret technical and creative wishes of visitors. An opportunity to trade confrontation between the exhibitors and buyers, knitting designers and designers of the most famous international fashion brands.
At the specific theme of technology and research on production is dedicated FASHION AT WORK. On the lower floor of the main pavilion, FASHION AT WORK brings together Italian and foreign exhibitors dedicated to consulting, design points and prototypes, printing on knitted, knitting machines, buttons and small parts, accessories and trimmings, embroideries and appliqués, dyeing and finishing, notebooks and bureaux de style, color coding systems, software systems for design or packaging.
Finally, a novelty is also the change of location (only for summer editions) for the selling exhibition of vintage clothing, accessories and design objects named Vintage Selection that for the first time ever will be staged at the Fortezza da Basso in Florence, together in place and time with Pitti Filati 79.

Zegna Baruffa Lane Borgosesia
This historic company was founded in 1850 in the particularly suitable Valsesia, both because of the passageway of the herds headed for the biellese, and because just in Borgosesia the shearing and washing of wool happened regularly. The social object was the same as that now appears in the Statute of the Zegna Baruffa Lane Borgosesia S.p.A., namely “Worsted wool spinning”.
With a promissory note of Lire 510,000 worth, the company in 1860 also contributes to Italy’s history: the title is given in guarantee to shipowners Rubattino of Genoa for using two steamers, the “Piemonte” and the “Lombard”, on which the thousand of Giuseppe Garibaldi embarked.
Today, Zegna Baruffa Lane Borgosesia, the great Italian factory, includes three product lines in a single collection.
Baruffa: is the line of Cashwool, a yarn born in 1978 that has revolutionized the way people make knitting worsted wool yarns. Shiny look but discreet, sweet hand almost silky, ability to withstand many washings without felting and stand the test of time. Cahswool, for these qualities, is an intuition that from 40 years continues to maintain its leadership skills: in fact, Cashwool is no longer just the name of a yarn but became a product category that all mills have entered and tried to imitate.
Cashwool was the combination of intuition, creativity, research, professionalism and love for the product. And these same characteristics we find today in H2DRY, unique and exclusive treatment that gives the wool and other natural fibers unique features and so far never reached.
The Baruffa line continues with a series of fancy yarns that go alongside the always sought Mousse but with different appearances, light or marked mottling, color games which make the yarn more versatile and customizable according to customer requirements.
Botto Poala: is the line of yarn where the technical limitations of the fibers used are stretched to the max. We use the finest wool yarn and the outcome is so thin that, on average you need a pound to cover the distance between Milan and Bologna and so light that knits can be kept in your pocket.
These ethereal fibers combine with silk, linen, cashmere and man made fibres to patterned yarns having the softness that only the highest quality raw materials can guarantee.
Chiavazza: is the line of Baba, the yarn which gave a twist to the way of integrating harmoniously wool and cashmere. Imitated, but never copied perfectly, the record remains. But this is also the line of carded yarns, present on the market for generations, starting from the classic super Geelong, in pure cashmere, today no longer only in the classic version of title 2/28, but also with a more contemporary conjugation in terms of title and aspect.
The versatility of the various threads allowed to combine them with each other and create new variants, less traditional and more creative. Important-looking but extremely lightweight yarns stand out, along with others, where the look takes us back in time but whose sweetness and softness evident to the touch, take the “vintage” into the future.
